While considerable attention has been paid to open the underground Jeffrey asbestos mine in the town of Asbestos, less attention has been paid to plans to re-open the mine operated by LAB Chrysotile at Thetford Mines.
Reacting to news that Thetford Mines, Que.-based LAB Chrysotile filed for bankruptcy Wednesday, Rideau Institute board member and senior advisor Kathleen Ruff told the Globe and Mail that, “The industry is totally bankrupt, but it continues to lobby to get public funds to save itself.”
The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour, and other members of the Saskatchewan trade union movement, sent congratulations to Kathleen Ruff, recipient of the 2011 Rideau Institute Leadership Award.
Rachel Lee, a Korean asbestos victim, came to Quebec in December 2010 as a member of the Asia-Quebec Solidarity delegation to ask that Quebec stop exporting asbestos. Her one desire was to save others from dying from asbestos.
